Basic Sailing Information

For a boat to move across the water it needs to have its sails set correctly to the direction of the wind. Before you depart to sail you should look for clues for the wind direction as in near by flags, trees, local weather reports or what other sailing boats are doing on the water.
Boats can sail in every direction bar into the NO GO ZONE, which is roughly 30 degrees either side of the wind direction.

If you sail to close to the Zone then the sails will start to flap and you will stop moving forward. This is ideal if you want just to slow down or stop for a rest. This is some time known as "IN IRONS." By setting your sails as the diagram to the left in relation to the wind direction, you will get the most out of your sailing with more speed and better control. More information on the Point of Sail will be supplied during the sessions.
